Canadian Centre for Cyber Security has Released a Set of Security Guidelines for Small Businesses

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) has released some cybersecurity guidelines for small to medium businesses. This is a great way to provide some guidance to small to medium businesses on what to focus on to be protected against modern threats, and as businesses grow.

The CCCS provides the following guidelines:

  • Use complex passwords and multi-factor authentication (MFA)

    • Helps protect devices and accounts

  • Keep software, including OS and applications, updated

    • Plugs holes in software that can be exploited

  • Back up data

    • Have a copy of data in case of compromise to recover from the compromise

  • Install security software (e.g. anti-virus)

    • Proactively and/or passively look for “bad” files, traffic, behaviour, etc. and stops them from doing harm

  • Train employees on cybersecurity

    • Understand the risks, threats, and signs of “bad” behaviour so that employees can also prevent attacks

  • Have an incident response plan

    • Be prepared in case of a compromise, and recover quickly with little impact

According to a Microsoft report, 96% of cyber attacks can be thwarted by having basic “cyber hygiene”, which involves implementing some basic security measures, such as those recommended by CCCS above. All businesses need to implement these basic measures to be protected in the modern world.
